Xbox CEO Discusses Console Price Hikes Driven by Hardware Tech Demand

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma addressed the issue of rising console prices in a recent interview, explaining how the broader tech industry's massive expansion into artificial intelligence has impacted hardware hardware economics. Sharma noted that while video games have historically served as a proving ground for graphics processing units, the growing global demand for GPUs across other technological fields is a positive development, even as it challenges hardware costs. Following multiple price increases, the entry-level Xbox Series S currently sits at $500, representing a $200 jump from its 2020 launch price. Looking toward Microsoft's next generation of hardware, codenamed Project Helix, Sharma emphasized that design decisions must prioritize efficiency and affordability alongside raw performance. Additionally, the Xbox chief suggested that Project Helix might evolve beyond a single traditional console, potentially taking the form of a varied group of systems.
