Sony Agrees to $8 Million Settlement Over Digital PlayStation Store Game Prices

Sony has agreed to pay nearly $8 million to PlayStation consumers as part of a class-action lawsuit settlement addressing digital game pricing practices. The lawsuit, originally filed in 2024, alleged that Sony created an unfair monopoly over the PlayStation Store by forcing publishers to surrender control over final retail pricing and stopping third-party retailers from selling redeemable digital codes. Court documents reveal that Sony chose to settle after its motion to dismiss the lawsuit was denied, effectively avoiding a civil trial. If the settlement receives final approval from the court, claims against Sony will be dismissed with prejudice, preventing similar future litigation on the matter. Sony maintains that it committed no wrongdoing as part of the agreement. PlayStation users who purchased specific affected titles directly from the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, may be eligible to receive compensation once the settlement details are finalized.
