Sony CEO Outlines Strategy Shift Away From Aggressive PS5 Hardware Sales

Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki revealed that the company no longer needs to aggressively push PlayStation 5 hardware sales as the console enters the latter half of its lifecycle. Speaking on the shift in corporate strategy, Totoki explained that rather than discounting hardware or selling consoles at a loss to attract new buyers, Sony is reallocating its primary focus toward generating recurring revenue from its established player base. Central to this strategy is the PlayStation Plus ecosystem, which currently boasts over 125 million monthly active users. Monetizing this active user base effectively has become a top commercial priority for the company moving forward. Totoki's remarks come as standard console pricing trends have shifted dramatically across the current generation, with the PS5 maintaining a higher price point today than when it initially launched.
