Saber Interactive Executive Reacts to the End of Physical Discs and Rising Console Costs

Tim Willits, chief creative officer at Saber Interactive, shared his perspective on major industry shifts, including Sony's plans to end support for physical PlayStation game discs by 2028 and the trend of rising console prices. Willits admitted he was surprised by the intense public backlash over the phase-out of physical media, noting that he personally prefers the convenience of digital downloads. However, he acknowledged that physical sales remain a significant revenue stream for developers, particularly in European markets compared to North America. While recognizing the nostalgic value of physical game covers and collectibles, Willits pointed out that consumer buying habits are rapidly shifting toward digital ecosystems. Additionally, the executive reflected on emerging hardware concepts being discussed across the industry, such as potential AI-driven gaming boxes, emphasizing that changing player preferences will ultimately shape how games are delivered and priced in the coming years.
